Sumo Wrestler Passes Away At 28


Sumo wrestler Shobushi died on 5/13/20 at the age of 28 from COVID-19.

He was hospitalized after he started feeling sick in April and tested positive for the virus. His condition worsened as the days went by and he was moved to intensive care. The illness caused his limbs and organs to stop working and he developed pneumonia. He is the first Japanese pro sports athlete to die from the virus according to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.

Shobushi made his debut at 15 and was a member of the Takadagawa stable.
